Fluent Woman

Fluent Woman Poem by Guy B Duhon Jr.

Curves spoke fluent woman,
but her body wasn’t the whole conversation.

It was her presence.

That quiet confidence
that never needed a room to agree with it.
The kind that made you straighten up
without her ever asking you to.

Face card carried no expiration date.
Pretty, sure.
But pretty gets introduced every day.

She had something harder to explain.

A softness that didn’t make her weak.
A fire that didn’t make her difficult.
A mind that could challenge mine
without turning everything into a fight.

She could make simple look intentional.
Hair pulled back.
Lip gloss.
Something comfortable on.
Still had me looking twice
as if I missed something the first time.

Maybe I did.

Maybe beauty changes
when you start paying attention
to the woman inside of it.

Her laugh when she forgot to be guarded.
Her silence when something was on her mind.
How her eyes told the truth
before her mouth decided if I deserved it.

She wore confidence
as if it had been tailored,
fitted around every lesson
that taught her what she would
and would not accept.

And somehow,
she made you notice her
without ever asking to be noticed.

That part stayed with me.

She wasn’t performing womanhood.
Wasn’t auditioning for attention.
Wasn’t shrinking herself
to make a man feel taller.

She knew she was a woman.

Fully.

And there is something dangerous
about a woman who knows her worth
but doesn’t need to announce the price.

Something beautiful about a woman
who can be desired
and still demand to be understood.

So yes,
I noticed the curves.

I’m a man.

But what made me stay in the moment
was everything they couldn’t show me.

Her peace.
Her humor.
Her boundaries.
Her imperfections.
Her little attitudes.
Her tenderness when nobody was watching.

All those pieces
that never make the picture
but make the woman.

And maybe that’s what attraction becomes
when you’ve lived enough.

You stop searching for perfection
and start recognizing presence.

A woman who feels good to talk to.
Good to sit beside.
Good to laugh with.
Good to be quiet around.

A woman who doesn’t make you forget
every woman you’ve ever known.

She makes you understand
why none of them were her.
